22 Sep 2025

From Bristol to Southampton to London , the Malaysian delegation led by British High Commission Kuala Lumpur (UK in Malaysia)— together with Malaysia Semiconductor Industry Association, SkyeChip, Collaborative Research in Engineering, Science & Technology (CREST) Center, and Invest Selangor Berhad embarked on a highly focused journey across universities, industries and the Microelectronics UK platform. Our mission: to showcase Malaysia’s semiconductor ecosystem and unlock long-term UK–Malaysia collaboration.

22 Sept – University of Bristol
We engaged with REWIRE and toured advanced labs in power electronics, micro-metrology, thermography & reliability testing, including the Centre for Device Thermography & Reliability (CDTR) and compound wafer facilities.

University of Bristol Spinoffs:

Duality – quantum photonics with photon signal generators and cryogenic photon detectors.
XMOS – fabless CMOS company creating programmable chips for cost efficiency by integrating the functions of multiple chips in a board.

23 Sept – University of Southampton
At the Optoelectronics Research Centre and Cornerstone, the leaders provided a detailed overview of their ecosystem and work in heterogeneous SoC integration(chiplets & optoelectronics) and took us on an fab windows tour. The fab is an industry level fab equipped with updated equipment.

University of Southampton Spinoffs:

Smith Optical – pioneering smart glasses which addresses the fundamental challenges of transparency, brightness and glow.
Sensiphi – fiber-based ultra-sensitive distributed acoustic sensing using conventional and also ultra-low loss enhanced back scattering fiber (ULEB) fibre.

24 Sept – Newport Industry Milestone (SMD Semiconductor)

Congratulations to Sarawak Microelectronics Design (SMD) for their MoU with Camtronics, X-Fab & Catapult, officiated by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Zohari. A major step towards setting up an R&D Innovation Hub in the UK.

24-25 Sept – Microelectronics UK (Microelectronics UK)

Malaysia proudly joined the Startup Launchpad (24th Sep), reinforcing the importance of supply chain diversification and championing UK–Malaysia semiconductor collaboration.

Takeaway: This was not just a visit but the start of sustained UK–Malaysia partnerships across research, design, packaging, and innovation between UK, which is strong in foundational science and research in power and optoelectronics (Technical Readiness Level -TRL – 1-5 ) and Malaysia which is strong in semiconductor high volume semiconductor and equipment manufacturing (TRL 8 and 9) — positioning Malaysia as a trusted global semiconductor partner and collaborator.
